Arden Almquist, established the Paul Carlson Medical Program.\u00a0 The hospital became program&#8217;s first project.\u00a0 Under the supervision of Dr. Wally and Sarah Thornbloom, the project&#8217;s first directors and other Covenant missionaries, the hospital was repaired.\u00a0 On March 20, 1968 the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\">Institut M\u00e9dical \u00c9vang\u00e9lique de Loko (IMELOKO) was dedicated to the memory of Paul Carlson as a gift from them President Mobutu and the government of Congo to the Covenant Church of Congo (CEUM).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today the hospital is staffed by 2 Congolese doctors, 25 nurses and many other support staff.\u00a0 The hospital offers general medicine\/adult care, surgery, maternity, obstetrics, pediatric, emergency services, a lab and pharmacy.\u00a0 There are also other services including a nutrition\/feeding center for malnourised children.<\/p>\n<p>The Loko hospital is the reference hospital for the Loko public health zone which covers 2,400 square miles of savanna and forested area.\u00a0 11 health centers or clinics and an additional 11 health outposts are scattered throughout the area.\u00a0 These clinics and health outposts provide primary health care for the population of over 125,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-p1\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;text-indent: 13.5pt\">\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand?moderation_action=report_form&object_type=post&object_id=3818&width=250&height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 20, 2018 was the 50th anniversary of Loko Hospital.\u00a0 The CEUM celebrated this anniversary with a big party April 14-15.\u00a0 We were able to attend the 5 hrs &amp; 50 min (yes indeed!) celebration worship service on the 15th.\u00a0 What joy!
