my children.\u201d commented Wedia Gbabolo.\u00a0 Wedia was the only woman amongst the planters gathered to welcome the CEUM delegation to the Bobagalawa nursery and seedbed.\u00a0 The CEUM delegation included President Mboka, Ren\u00e9e Hale (Executive Director of Paul Carlson Partnership), Pascale (Caf\u00e9 Africa technician and overseer), Cindy, me and a few others connected to the project.\u00a0 We went to see the newly established and planted (some) nurseries for the Karawa Coffee Project (KCP) economic development initiative.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Bobagalawa-7-640x480.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3775\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Bobagalawa-7-640x480-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"345\" &amp; discussion with CEUM visitorsAlong 4 axes branching out from Karawa, Bonudana, Bobadi, Bominenge and Bodokola, KCP has signed up planters, verified 20 sites for the nurseries, established 20 nurseries and completed much of the planting.\u00a0 All since January 23.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/KCP-sign-640x480.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3779\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/KCP-sign-640x480.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"252\" numbers involved:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1,347 farmers enrolled with various sizes of plots for coffee<\/li>\n<li>87 villages involved<\/li>\n<li>5 ha of coffee to be planted<\/li>\n<li>One platte-band (seedbed) per ha so 961.5 seedbeds<\/li>\n<li>1,100 coffee bushes\/ha<\/li>\n<li>3 months after planting the seeds the young coffee seedlings will be transplanted into sacs in the nursery<\/li>\n<li>6 months in the nursery and then planted out in the field<\/li>\n<li>First harvest starts after 3 years, full production in 5 years<\/li>\n<li>KCP has hired 5 agronomists, one to oversee each axe and id=\"caption-attachment-3777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coffee farmers in Bobagalawa<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Background.\u00a0<\/strong> Coffee was a major commercial product in the area from the 1970s into the mid-90s when war and a disease ravaged the plantations.\u00a0 In its heyday tons of hulled Robusta coffee was shipped out of the area to Kinshasa and then around the world.\u00a0 As a source of revenue the apex of Congo&#8217;s exportation was in 1989 when it exported 119,320 tons of coffee.\u00a0 From that point on production started dropping as did exports to the point that in 2003 Congo only exported 7,162 tons.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3782\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-3782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The red beans are ready to be harvested<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the past couple years James Fischer, former economic development director for PCP, researched Cafe Africa and organized an initial assessment of the potential.\u00a0 Over the past year Ren\u00e9e Hale has pursued the conversation with Caf\u00e9 Africa, the CEUM and an interested donor.\u00a0 The result is a new 3-way partnership between the CEUM, Caf\u00e9 Africa (the implementing partner) and PCP (the financial partner).<\/p>\n<p>Caf\u00e9 Africa&#8217;s commitment is<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to train farmers to properly grow, prune and harvest coffee<\/li>\n<li>to train growers to prepare the coffee for sale<\/li>\n<li>to set-up local growers associations for support<\/li>\n<li>to help with marketing the coffee by training the associations to function as cooperatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CEUM, PCP and\u00a0Caf\u00e9 Africa believe that this initiative has
