{"id":1954,"date":"2012-11-26T18:41:56","date_gmt":"2012-11-26T23:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/?p=1954"},"modified":"2012-11-26T18:41:56","modified_gmt":"2012-11-26T23:41:56","slug":"green-peppers-and-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/2012\/11\/green-peppers-and-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Green peppers and sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1968\" style=\"width: 130px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2012\/11\/lg-green-peppers-close.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1968\" class=\" wp-image-1968\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2012\/11\/lg-green-peppers-close-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1968\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beautiful green pepper<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So what do green peppers and sustainability have to do with each other? \u00a0The green house project at the Kitengela Covenant Church is truly a sustainable project as they have successfully moved from crop to crop and now they&#8217;re raising green peppers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1957\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2012\/11\/image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1957\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1957 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2012\/11\/image-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Green peppers on the vine<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Started through a Covenant World Relief (CWR) grant in 2008, the greenhouse project was first a chicken house which successfully raised broilers and laying hens. \u00a0After most of \u00a0a year of raising chickens, Pastor Simon Kamau of the Kitengela church noted that the feed price was going up and the chicken price was going down. \u00a0So he decided to get out of the chicken business and raise tomatoes. \u00a0He worked with the Kenya Agriculture Service to test the soil and learn what fertilizer he needed. \u00a0He also visited the large supermarkets and asked what kind of tomatoes they would buy from him. \u00a0And then he raised beautiful tomatoes for about a year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1959\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2012\/11\/image1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1959\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1959 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2012\/11\/image1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harvested green peppers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Now after the tomatoes, he has again done his research and switched to raising green peppers. \u00a0The photos show the beautiful green pepper crop. \u00a0Revenue for each of these ventures is helping the church respond to needs of the many Congolese refugees in the church and area. \u00a0The church is teaching the younger children English, negotiating school fees to get students in school for a reduced price, arranging apprenticeships for promising refugees, helping them to find jobs (such as for \u00a0a Congolese pastor to teach French in a Kenya school) and more. \u00a0Thanks Lord for Simon and his leadership and for the blessings on this project and church.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand?moderation_action=report_form&object_type=post&object_id=1954&width=250&height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So what do green peppers and sustainability have to do with each other? \u00a0The green house project at the Kitengela Covenant Church is truly a sustainable project as they have successfully moved from crop to crop and now they&#8217;re raising green peppers.
