{"id":8266,"date":"2021-02-24T22:14:01","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T02:14:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/?p=8266"},"modified":"2021-02-28T16:44:46","modified_gmt":"2021-02-28T20:44:46","slug":"radical-hospitality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/?p=8266","title":{"rendered":"Radical Hospitality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8267\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/eduardo-kingman-1pg400f-750x563.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/eduardo-kingman-1pg400f-750x563.jpg 750w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/eduardo-kingman-1pg400f-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/eduardo-kingman-1pg400f-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/eduardo-kingman-1pg400f-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/eduardo-kingman-1pg400f.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Radical Hospitality<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been quite a few years now that God continues to bring me back in one way or another to Romans 12, speaking of <em>Love in Action.\u00a0 <\/em>In Romans 12:9-13, Paul says these words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Love must be sincere.\u00a0 Hate what is evil, cling to what is good.\u00a0 Be devoted to one another in love. \u00a0Honor one another above yourselves.\u00a0 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.\u00a0 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.\u00a0 Share with the Lord\u2019s people who are in need.\u00a0 PRACTICE hospitality.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s be honest, I think almost each line of this passage could be a sermon all in itself.\u00a0 Maybe that will happen someday, but not today.\u00a0 I feel I have something else that God is trying to help me \u201cverbally process\u201d over the computer.\u00a0 So, let\u2019s get to it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I am currently in a cohort of missionary women working through different themes: racial righteousness, Sabbath and rest.\u00a0 We are reading together a book called: <em>Healing our Broken Humanity.\u00a0 <\/em>(Disclaimer, I am only halfway through the book so I am not sure exactly my take-aways yet for the book as a whole), but I will say, the chapter I just finished, <u>Reactivate Hospitality<\/u> really made me re-think and re-shape some of my thinking.\u00a0 As you can imagine, with a book of this title, there is a lot going on in the book.\u00a0 The main premise for this section was obviously to talk about hospitality, but hospitality in relation to \u201cthe other\u201d, people that are different, \u201cthem\u201d, \u201cthey\u201d.\u00a0 The Western church, in my opinion looks at \u201cthe other\u201d very differently than the rest of the world.\u00a0 I feel I can speak to this as my own view of \u201cthe other\u201d has been challenged since I have been living in Ecuador.\u00a0 The Church is big, and primarily where it is largest is not in the West, it is everywhere else.\u00a0 The average Christian today is not white, middle class and Western, they are female, brown or black and likely of lower class.\u00a0 The Church is different now than when I was growing up.\u00a0 Guess what?\u00a0 That is good news!\u00a0 It is becoming more diverse.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that what the call of the Western church was?\u00a0 To go in to the world and evangelize and tell people about the good news?\u00a0 However, it seems that the Western church doesn\u2019t know what to do with those evangelized because they don\u2019t look like them?\u00a0 They are \u201cthe other\u201d.\u00a0 The Church around the world is in a unique place to embrace \u201cthe other\u201d in an act or rather a command of \u201cPRACTICING\u201d hospitality.\u00a0 The kind of hospitality described in Romans as well as the kind I witness here in Ecuador and hear around the world in black and brown churches is RADICAL.\u00a0 It is messy and hard and requires a cost, but isn\u2019t that what Christ requires of us?\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t expect any more from us than he practiced and lived out himself.\u00a0 We have a perfect example of how to do this in Jesus.\u00a0 So, why aren\u2019t we? (When I say we, I mean the Western church).<\/p>\n<p>I contend that we have a lot to learn.\u00a0 This is one area where we as the White, Western church can throw our hands up and say we need help, and that is OK.<\/p>\n<p>We need new narratives, new stories, new ways of looking at Scripture that is through the lens of \u201cthe other\u201d.\u00a0 Again, we can go back to Scripture and follow the Israelites all the way up to Jesus to show us how to do this.\u00a0 Then we can go to our neighbor, \u201cthe other\u201d who doesn\u2019t look like us or talk like us, who thinks differently and interprets differently because their story is likely more relatable to that which is in Scripture than we can imagine.\u00a0 We need to read Scripture TOGETHER with \u201cthe other\u201d to learn who the Bible was written to.\u00a0 Does this sound odd or scary?\u00a0 Good.\u00a0 Lean in.\u00a0 Push through it because we will be better for it.\u00a0 Listening.\u00a0 Learning.\u00a0 Asking and attempting to understand new narratives and new stories.\u00a0 The refugee, the immigrant, the foreigner, the outsider, the incarcerated, the women.\u00a0 The other.\u00a0 These are all stories we need to hear and listen to.\u00a0 You may wonder why?\u00a0 Scripture calls us to practice, PRACTICE radical hospitality.\u00a0 Not with those who look like us, but with the other.\u00a0 If that is the call, the command, than why aren\u2019t we doing it?\u00a0 Why are we afraid?\u00a0 The time of fear needs to be over, because there is a group of \u201cothers\u201d who need the Church.\u00a0 They need radical hospitality and the church is in a prime place to embrace as we were embraced, love as we are loved, cared for, healed and reconciled as we are becoming.\u00a0 Step up Church and be the reconciled, be the ones that show radical hospitality when everything around us in the world tells us to push the others away.\u00a0 Stand up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp?moderation_action=report_form&object_type=post&object_id=8266&width=250&height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Radical Hospitality It\u2019s been quite a few years now that God continues to bring me back in one way or another to Romans 12, speaking of Love in Action.\u00a0 In Romans 12:9-13, Paul says these words: Love must be sincere.\u00a0 Hate what is evil, cling to what is good.\u00a0 Be devoted to one another in &hellip;
