{"id":2529,"date":"2013-07-30T01:16:09","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T05:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/?p=2529"},"modified":"2013-07-30T01:16:09","modified_gmt":"2013-07-30T05:16:09","slug":"a-reflection-on-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/?p=2529","title":{"rendered":"A Reflection on Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2013\/07\/1211931622Is0Jiv.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2530\" alt=\"1211931622Is0Jiv\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2013\/07\/1211931622Is0Jiv.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2013\/07\/1211931622Is0Jiv.jpg 400w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2013\/07\/1211931622Is0Jiv-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even before the Trayvon Martin shooting trial had made big headlines and caught national attention, Kim and I were recently reflecting on the difficulties of race relations when we were at a park in Chicago.\u00a0 As we sat on a bench and discussed with a friend some of the struggles of ministry and watched Simeon play on the playground equipment from a safe distance, we noticed something.\u00a0 Simeon had quickly struck up a friendship with a little boy of Middle-eastern ethnicity and they played together without fear or even a second thought of apprehension.\u00a0 They were the same size and age and both had a similar mode of tackling the slides and teeter-tooters with a reckless abandon.\u00a0 They were instant friends!\u00a0 After playing for a while and saying good-bye to both the boy and his parents, we both wondered <b><i>why we all make it so hard!\u00a0 <\/i><\/b>What do we learn after the early childhood years that says that little boys (or big boys for that matter!) and girls shouldn\u2019t just be together and relate like kids do at such an early age.\u00a0 Where or when do we learn <b><i>that we are so different???<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you didn\u2019t see the national attention that the Trayvon Martin trial caused and showed the chasm between races that still exists, then maybe you don\u2019t know what I am talking about.\u00a0 Well, for one, you can just <b>trust us<\/b> as missionaries serving on an international, inter-racial setting and folks that have lived in an urban, multicultural setting for many years that we know that racial difficulties still exist.\u00a0 But if you need more proof, you can check out this video: <a href=\"http:\/\/alturl.com\/uvgw9\">http:\/\/alturl.com\/uvgw9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As missionaries, this kind of issue is at the forefront of our minds and consciences.\u00a0 We are very aware of our race in Ecuador though it is safe to say that we never have really faced any sort of racism or discrimination in Ecuador.\u00a0 We are privileged-white folks there so we don\u2019t really have any problems in that regard but at the same time, we always know that we are different.\u00a0 It is always obvious as people often give us double-looks and ask us where we are from.\u00a0 It is pretty much always positive so it\u2019s not a big deal but the fact that we are of a different race is something that is always on our minds.\u00a0 Being conscious of our race is something that we are used to in Ecuador which is a reality for many folks here in the states.<\/p>\n<p>In this day and age where we see that the chasm between races is just as wide as it has ever been, our prayer and our hearts are for reconciliation, Christ\u2019s reconciliation.\u00a0 It\u2019s only through Christ and his reconciling work that we can have hope.\u00a0 One day, all things will be reconciled in Christ but in this day, it is our work to be reconcilers in this world (Colossians 1:20).\u00a0 We are Christ\u2019s ambassadors of reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAll this is from God,\u00a0who reconciled us to himself through Christ\u00a0and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people\u2019s sins against them.\u00a0And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.\u00a0 <b><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/b>We are therefore Christ\u2019s ambassadors,\u00a0as though God were making his appeal through us.\u00a0We implore you on Christ\u2019s behalf: Be reconciled to God.\u00a0<b><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup><\/b>God made him who had no sin\u00a0to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0 <strong><i>2<sup>nd<\/sup> Corinthians 5:18-20<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/delp?moderation_action=report_form&object_type=post&object_id=2529&width=250&height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
