I’m passing this on, a thought provoking paraphrase of I Cor 13 sent to my by email from my close buddy, Jan Cone:<\/p>\n

I may be able to speak fluently the language of my chosen field and even understand its culture,\u00a0but if I have no love, the impact of my speech is no more for Christ than that of a businessman who comes to exploit the people.<\/p>\n

I may have the gift of contextualizing God\u2019s word when I deliver it to my hearers. \u00a0I may have all knowledge about their customs. \u00a0I may have the faith needed to combat witchcraft,\u00a0but if I have no love, I am nothing.<\/p>\n

I may give everything that I have to the poor, to the hungry in the favelas. I may even give my life for them,\u00a0but if I have no love, this does no good.<\/p>\n

Love is\u2026.<\/p>\n

thinking in their thought patterns<\/p>\n

caring enough to understand their world view,<\/p>\n

listening to their questions,<\/p>\n

feeling their burdens,<\/p>\n

respecting them,<\/p>\n

identifying with them in their need,<\/p>\n

belonging to them.<\/p>\n

Love is eternal.<\/p>\n

Cultures pass away.<\/p>\n

Dynamic equivalents will change because cultures change.<\/p>\n

Patterns of worship and church administration will need revision<\/p>\n

Languages will be altered over time.<\/p>\n

Institutions will be replaced.<\/p>\n

\u2026..Because these are not reality.<\/p>\n

Since I am finite, I can only study how to express the Message cross-culturally,\u00a0Trying to free it from my cultural bias. \u00a0I am able to do this only in a limited way,\u00a0But I pray that the Spirit will use my life to show Christ to those with whom I work.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile these remain\u2026..<\/p>\n

Identification<\/p>\n

Contextualization<\/p>\n

And Love.<\/p>\n

But the greatest of these is LOVE!<\/p>\n
