They are fleeing\u00a0spiraling violence in their home countries carried out by\u00a0rival drug gangs and attacks by police on suspected gang\u00a0members. Far fewer children come with a parent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STORY:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ten-year-old Benito sadly left his home in El Salvador\u00a0with his mother and five-year-old sister because gang\u00a0activity had made it a far too dangerous place to live.\u00a0Benito says, \u201cThe day I left home, I was very sad because\u00a0I had to say goodbye to all my friends and the people I\u00a0love. We traveled for many, many days until we came to\u00a0the border. We waited in an abandoned house until a\u00a0van came to pick us up. Some men prepared a raft and\u00a0they took a group of us\u2014including some other children\u00a0without parents\u2014to the other side of the river. We saw\u00a0alligators in the water; it was scary.\u201d\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we reached the other side, we walked and\u00a0walked until we reached a road. When the Border\u00a0Patrol arrived, officers took our names and other\u00a0information, and then they took us to a large building.\u00a0We were there for a week, and I was separated from\u00a0my mother and sister for about five days. It was hard.\u00a0Because there were so many people, I could hardly\u00a0sleep. Many kids got sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister, mother, and I finally left there and came here\u00a0to this place. The people are friendly and they gave us\u00a0good food and we were able to rest for a while. I like it\u00a0here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>REFLECTION:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What do you think it\u2019s like to leave your country and\u00a0flee to a strange one with a different language? What\u00a0are your thoughts or questions about the children who\u00a0don\u2019t have parents? What do you think Jesus would\u00a0want us to do? Pray that in the United States\u00a0we can find a way to help all the children.
