These people are\u00a0mistreated because they are different. Those with\u00a0disabilities face an even greater challenge when they are\u00a0displaced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STORY:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Soman Naik is a five-year-old boy. He and his parents\u00a0were forced from their home and they fled to\u00a0Bruhawadi in Odisha, India. They were forced out\u00a0because they are Christians. This was not the end of\u00a0their problems because Soman Naik has a minor mental\u00a0disability. This causes trouble for the family.\u00a0Soman Naik could not receive admission to any of the\u00a0nearby schools because of his disability. He attended a\u00a0Balwadi, a government-run nursery school for needy\u00a0children. However the teacher made him sit separately\u00a0in the corner of the classroom. Soman Naik was sad and\u00a0discouraged and so were his parents.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Then Soman Naik\u2019s parents learned about the education\u00a0class at Sugudawadi for displaced children at the\u00a0Hindustani Covenant Church center. They came and\u00a0shared their problem with the teacher and staff at the\u00a0center. The teacher allowed Soman Naik to come\u00a0play and learn with other children there. Soman\u00a0Naik was accepted and encouraged by the teachers\u00a0and other children. He began to learn and his\u00a0friendship with children in the class allowed him to\u00a0learn faster.<\/p>\n<p>This year Soman Naik was taken to a primary (elementary) school at Sugudawadi where the teacher interviewed him. Both Soman Naik and his parents are now happy. Because of the help Soman Naik received at the Hindustani Covenant Church center, he has now been accepted in primary school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REFLECTION:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What were you thinking about as this story was read?\u00a0Have you ever been rejected or made fun of?
