Farmers were helpless and people didn\u2019t know where to go for help and many left the area in search of work and food. As tankers were made available and hand pumps were repaired, water was more accessible but villagers knew that more needed to be done. People are now thinking about adopting an alternative cropping pattern. They are considering adopting sustainable crops instead of cash crops. For example, mango trees need sufficient care and nurture in the beginning stages, but once they are grown they can survive even when there is an obvious scarcity of water.<\/p>\n<p>This drought has left many in need of immediate relief. Here is one story of survival:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><i>My name is Sunil Gangaram Landge.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5855\" alt=\"MAHARASHTRA (3)\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/04\/MAHARASHTRA-3-300x225.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/04\/MAHARASHTRA-3-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/04\/MAHARASHTRA-3-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/> I am 39 years old.\u00a0 We have 2 sons and a daughter.\u00a0 <!--more-->We work as manual laborers.\u00a0 We are extremely poor.\u00a0 Therefore, many a time I could not afford to buy food for the family and we went to bed without any food.\u00a0 My hard work did not pay enough to buy food for us.\u00a0 Quite a number of times we had borrowed money from the neighbors and relatives to buy at least a day\u2019s meal for the family.\u00a0 It happened that the neighbors and relatives refused to lend any money or any kind of help.\u00a0\u00a0 Everyone was talking about drought. Neighbors were telling that there will be shortage of food and water, because the government has announced arrival of drought.\u00a0 But it did not make much difference to our lives, because we went hungry then and we would remain hungry with the arrival of drought.\u00a0 <\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5856\" alt=\"MAHARASHTRA (4)\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/04\/MAHARASHTRA-4-300x225.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/04\/MAHARASHTRA-4-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/04\/MAHARASHTRA-4.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>Many things were happening around, but no help reached us.\u00a0 Then we heard about \u2018grain bank\u2019, which will give jawars to people like us and we will be able to have food for some more days.\u00a0 I thank those sirs and our village leaders, who included my name in the list they were preparing.\u00a0 After few days, I received 1 sack of jawar (25 kilograms grains in 1 sack).\u00a0 It was like a hope of survival during the devastating drought.
