{"id":3712,"date":"2012-10-31T12:28:10","date_gmt":"2012-10-31T17:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/?p=3712"},"modified":"2012-10-29T10:32:29","modified_gmt":"2012-10-29T15:32:29","slug":"updates-from-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/2012\/10\/updates-from-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Updates from India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Below are testimonies and updates from our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.covchurch.org\/relief\/projects\/cd\/india-covenant-social-services\/\" target=\"_blank\">three projects in India<\/a> in partnership with the Hindustani Covenant Church:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><strong>Testimony from Kashmir<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Mukhtar Ahmad Bhatt is a boy of 11 years living in Naroo.\u00a0 The village where he lives is a backward and remote village.\u00a0 His parents are farm laborers and were unable to pay for the education of their child.\u00a0 Therefore, Mukhtar stopped going to school.\u00a0 He started spending his days just roaming around or joining his parents on the farm lands.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">He was contacted by our staff at Srinagar while we were carrying out a survey to start a non-formal education center in the village.\u00a0 Initially the boy was reluctant to come to the center, because he had developed a habit of roaming around free.\u00a0 But slowly he began to come to the center and spend time with other children coming to the center.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">He developed an interest in learning.\u00a0 He did well like other children in the center.\u00a0 Considering his progress, we suggested his parents readmit him to school.\u00a0 With some follow ups it was possible to readmit him to school.\u00a0 He now regularly goes to school and is performing well in his studies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">His parents are thankful to CSS and CWR for the good done to their son.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Testimony from Bihar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3716\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2012\/10\/Kalwadevi-Bihar-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2012\/10\/Kalwadevi-Bihar-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2012\/10\/Kalwadevi-Bihar-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I am Kalwadevi, wife of late Sugarat Baswa, and I belong to a scheduled caste [the recognized Dalit caste &#8211; the mass, untouchable castes] in Sitamarhi, Bihar.\u00a0 I am living the poverty stricken life of a widow.\u00a0 Recently my husband passed away because we could not afford for his treatment.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thereafter, responsibility of the family came upon my shoulders.\u00a0 I started going from house to house and cleaning their utensils for a living and for taking care of my three daughters and one son.\u00a0 But my situation got worse whenever I did not receive my wages on time.\u00a0 It happened that sometimes we went hungry for days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">I was in such a bad condition, I had to give my eldest daughter in marriage, because she had already reached marriageable age.\u00a0 I collected some money asking from door to door and from village to village. I also took some loan with high interest rate.\u00a0 Somehow the marriage was done.\u00a0 Sometime later, my son got married to a girl in the neighborhood village and went away to Punjab in search of job.\u00a0 I hear less about him and his family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">In addition, I became weaker and sick by not taking medicine in time.\u00a0 But I had to live on, because I had the responsibility of my two daughters.\u00a0 They have to be given in marriage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">But, by the mercy of our God, that I met Jitendra (the field staff at Sitamari).\u00a0 He came to know about my situation and suggested that I can start a business for a better living.\u00a0 He also offered me a micro loan with no interest.\u00a0 With his guidance and micro loan, I have started a small business of selling readymade clothes and toys for children.\u00a0 I go from lane to street with a tri-cycle and sell those items.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Now I am able to live a better life through the profit received from the small business.\u00a0 I, on behalf of my family, express millions of thanks to CSS and CWR for their generous support and guidance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Apki Behen (Your sister),<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Kalwadevi<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><strong>Update from Orissa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">40 families have been supported through a connection with the government for various projects and facilities.\u00a0 Two training programs have been conducted on how to avail government linkages and what are the appropriate projects and facilities available for the tribal Christians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">30 farmers have been rewarded farm lands on a one-year lease basis for cultivation.\u00a0 Rice will be their major cultivation in these lands.\u00a0 These farmers cannot cultivate in their own land, because they fear that once they enter their village, they may be asked to convert to local religion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3715\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2012\/10\/agataparichha-Orissa-300x218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2012\/10\/agataparichha-Orissa-300x218.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2012\/10\/agataparichha-Orissa.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The beneficiaries of all categories have been encouraged to participate in the Palli Sabha (village meeting).\u00a0 The Palli Sabha has agreed to approve Indira Awas for availing housing to seven poor people.\u00a0\u00a0 Seven of the beneficiaries have received job cards (an arrangement which provides at least 100 days of earning opportunity to poor).\u00a0 Some of them have received Ration Cards (under this arrangement, a card holder receives few kilograms of rice, wheat, sugar and cooking oil at very subsidized rates).\u00a0 Four persons have been able to receive BPL card (a BPL card holder is recognized by the government as Below Poverty Line, and is given all schemes available for them).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Non- formal education classes are continuing at Padrikiya.\u00a0 Sewing classes are continuing in Murdiparga and Kopukuta with 12 and 15 students respectively.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are continually grateful for this great partnership with HCC. <a href=\"http:\/\/covchurch.tv\/rag-picker-project-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to watch a great video about their ongoing with children living in the slums in India.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr?moderation_action=report_form&#038;object_type=post&#038;object_id=3712&#038;width=250&#038;height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below are testimonies and updates from our three projects in India in partnership with the Hindustani Covenant Church:\u00a0 Testimony from Kashmir Mukhtar Ahmad Bhatt is a boy of 11 years living in Naroo.\u00a0 The village where he lives is a backward and remote village.\u00a0 His parents are farm laborers and were unable to pay for [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":124,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[279],"tags":[474,286,327],"class_list":["post-3712","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-community-development","tag-children","tag-india","tag-women"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
