Today, March 8th, is recognized as International Women’s Day. One of our values at Covenant World Relief is the dignity of all people, which means that we believe all people are created in God’s image, men and women alike. We take time today to celebrate women around the world living out their God-given identity while also taking a moment to pause and realize that systems and structures remain that can frustrate women from expressing their full humanity.

There is plenty of reading on the internet today, so here are some recommendations.

On the blog of CWR partner World Relief, Larissa Peters has a humbling post on the work of two Cambodian women to address issues of injustice in their communities. Another one of our partners, HEAL Africa, was featured on Wednesday’s episode of PBS Newshour for their work in restoring rape victims to physical and spiritual well-being.

For all the political junkies out there, be sure to check out USAID’s newly published “Gender Equality and Female Empowerment” policy, which discusses how USAID hopes to strengthen the fundamental link between the issues of gender equality and international development as a whole. Also worthwhile is the United Nations’ Fact Sheet that evaluates the progress of rural women to the Millennium Development Goals. It is worth noting that by most measures, rural women are significantly disadvantaged compared to rural men and urban women.

Of course, we at CWR remain committed to advancing the position of women worldwide. Check out our post from last year’s International Women’s Day to see how our partner organizations continue to do great work for and with women across the globe.

How have you seen God’s image displayed through a woman in your life today? What did you do to celebrate it?
