Mbote mingi from Gemena! There is\u00a0lot happening these days, so I will give you a few highlights:<\/p>\n

Our big focus is water. World Vision has hired two new folks from\u00a0Kinshasa and Zambia to implement the WASH program, which will provide\u00a0clean water and hygiene\/sanitation education for the entire city of\u00a0Gemena. This will include repairing and restoring existing capped\u00a0springs, digging wells with solar powered pumps, and installing hand\u00a0pumps for easier access, just to name a few. Wallace and Sandy, our\u00a0WASH team, are working almost around the clock to get these projects\u00a0started. \u00a0Providing water to 300,000+ people is no small task! But\u00a0with your generous donations, we will see clean water more readily\u00a0available in Gemena, and we will then testify to the miraculous power\u00a0of partnership of God\u2019s people.<\/p>\n

A very practical way that people are seeing the benefit of our work\u00a0is the nutrition program that has been launched. Gemenites learn how\u00a0they can do simple things, like add ground peanuts into their manioc\u00a0flour, to provide more protein for their children\u2019s diets without\u00a0paying more! These simple recipe ideas could be revolutionary in\u00a0improving the overall health of our kids in Gemena.<\/p>\n

Another exciting program involves the Covenant Church of Congo (CEUM) partnering\u00a0with World Vision to promote savings group training for the women of\u00a0our region. Savings groups organize women to save their money in\u00a0groups of 15- 25 women in order that they can take loans from the\u00a0group, and pay back with interest to see the common pot grow. Only\u00a0one month into the training, there is a lot of buzz about this program\u00a0and people are already starting to form groups, even though they\u00a0haven\u2019t yet finished the training! These groups will also serve as a\u00a0platform to teach women ways to improve their business, their health, and their communities. This is an important first step before\u00a0introducing micro-finance programs in the years to come.<\/p>\n

So, we are breaking ground and planting seeds. The World Vision office is a\u00a0constant stream of activity and there is a feeling of energy and\u00a0excitement about the coming year. This is our year of implementation\u00a0thanks to the generous support of so many in the United States and Canada who have said\u00a0\u201cYes, we hope with the people of Congo.\u201d This would not be possible\u00a0without your support, and I just wish you could be here to see the joy\u00a0and clarity in people\u2019s eyes when we teach a new concept. I am\u00a0finding that people are hungry to learn more about the world they live\u00a0in, and World Vision in partnership with the Covenant and other local\u00a0churches are sharing information and knowledge everyday, meeting the\u00a0deep desires of the people to be educated in all areas. Good\u00a0education is highly valued, but is only available to few. We seek to change that, for both adults and children, to create a\u00a0more informed and empowered community, driven to change their own\u00a0lives.<\/p>\n

As I reflect on the past year I am overwhelmed because I had struggled\u00a0to find signs of hope here. Yet I find it growing in me the longer I\u00a0stay. People want to see a brighter future, and they are taking steps\u00a0towards that light everyday. Thank you, faithful churches and\u00a0individuals at home, for saying \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
