Update on the Situation in CAR

We received the news that President of the Central African Republic (CAR), Francois Bozize fled his country across the border into our region of the DRC, with speculations that he is now in Cameroon. The Rebel Group Seleka has taken control of the city of Bangui. There has been fighting and looting, and Bangui residents are advised to stay in their homes for safety.

The drive from Gemena to Bangui is over 180 miles, but takes 8 hours due to road conditions. While Bangui isn’t so far, there is no immediate threat to our area. However, Bangui is a major trading center with Gemena and will certainly be impacted by the interruption of economic activity.

Last November we were on edge once again due to the rebel takeover of Goma, in the Eastern Region of the Congo. Although at times there may be regional insecurity, World Vision is structured to work with local church partners and other organizations to ensure that work continues and leadership remains on the ground, especially during times of instability.

What can we do as donors to protect our World Vision kids in times of uncertainty like these?

– Your sponsorship of a WV child not only works toward the development of Gemena, but is also building safety nets for children and families during times of disaster and crisis.

– Get up to date on your African current events. Read about what’s happening, and not just from Western news sources. I like The New African Magazine and Afrik News.

– Try to glean some understanding of the history of the conflicts in this region by reading books like Dancing in the Glory of
the Monster by Jason Stearns, and King Leopold’s Ghost by Adam Hochschild.

– Pray, and don’t stop. That is most powerful weapon we have against powers of oppression, violence and war.

Psalm 30 says: “I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me. Lord my God, I called to you for help and you healed me.”

Heal us of our ignorance and indifference Lord, and heal this Central African land that You love. Amen.
