{"id":1895,"date":"2016-12-04T22:22:27","date_gmt":"2016-12-05T04:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/?p=1895"},"modified":"2016-12-07T10:47:28","modified_gmt":"2016-12-07T16:47:28","slug":"cultivating-faith-in-our-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/2016\/12\/04\/cultivating-faith-in-our-families\/","title":{"rendered":"Cultivating faith in our families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Sunday\u00a0we celebrated 4 years of marriage workshops at Rios de Agua Viva, one of the Covenant churches in Oaxaca.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/IMG_2648.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1900 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/IMG_2648-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"img_2648\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/IMG_2648-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/IMG_2648-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/IMG_2648-250x188.jpg 250w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/IMG_2648-1200x900.jpg 1200w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/IMG_2648-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nils and I have been a part of this ministry from the beginning, and it is a joy to see and hear how God is at work in the different families who have been participating over the years. \u00a0The theme for this last workshop was cultivating lasting faith in our families. \u00a0I facilitated a time of Bible and personal reflection on how we are doing and then shared different ideas from the book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sticky-Faith-Guide-Your-Family\/dp\/0310338972\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1480892383&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=sticky+faith+guide+for+your+family\">Sticky Faith <\/a>by Kara Powell.<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0highlight was hearing each group&#8217;s reflections from their study of Deuteronomy 6:4-9:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span id=\"en-NIV-5091\" class=\"text Deut-6-4\">Hear, O Israel: The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> our God, the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> is one.<span style=\"font-size: 6.875px\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-5092\" class=\"text Deut-6-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>Love the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-5093\" class=\"text Deut-6-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-5094\" class=\"text Deut-6-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-5095\" class=\"text Deut-6-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-5096\" class=\"text Deut-6-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We looked at the importance of sharing our faith every day, in stopping along the way to notice the small gifts from God. \u00a0We talked about how love should be at\u00a0the center of all of our relationships. \u00a0We recognized that the Word must be\u00a0on our hearts first as parents in order to share it with our children. \u00a0We looked at the importance of symbolism in teaching faith to our kids.<\/p>\n<p>In each group\u00a0there were older couples with adult children as well as younger couples with little kids or no kids yet. \u00a0It was beautiful to witness the sharing of wisdom between generations, and especially to hear the older couples share openly about\u00a0their mistakes and encouraging the younger families to make faith and time together a priority.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/IMG_2640.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" when I had the opportunity to share about the importance of family traditions and how celebrating Advent in our family has helped cultivate a sense of wonder, joy and love. \u00a0Advent is always a special time for us to do devotions and pray together while we light the Advent candles. \u00a0Each Advent I seek to find new ways to draw my kids into the mystery of the season. \u00a0This year each one of us is\u00a0filling out a coloring\/doodling prayer as our Advent calendar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/IMG_2680.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1901 size-medium\" arrived in Oaxaca, we discovered that Covenant churches here did not celebrate Advent or follow the church calendar so\u00a0whenever\u00a0I have the opportunity to teach about it and celebrate it with them, I go for it! \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/clauson\/2014\/12\/16\/celebrating-advent-in-oaxaca\/\">Here<\/a> is a previous blog post sharing more about celebrating\u00a0Advent in Oaxaca.<\/p>\n<p>We are grateful for these opportunities to reflect with other families on how we can deepen our faith in and love for our\u00a0Father who because of His love for the whole world sent
