{"id":925,"date":"2018-10-18T18:53:09","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T18:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cjhoskins\/?p=925"},"modified":"2018-10-18T18:53:21","modified_gmt":"2018-10-18T18:53:21","slug":"prophets-of-a-future-not-our-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cjhoskins\/2018\/10\/18\/prophets-of-a-future-not-our-own\/","title":{"rendered":"prophets of a future not our own"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>words by jenny<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">As an undergrad at North Park University, I had the opportunity to take a couple classes at the seminary, under an African scholar named Kazi Joshua.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I would walk into Nyvall Hall to sit in a small classroom with students who felt so much older and experienced than I (even though, in many cases, it was maybe only a few years and a summer at camp that did).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Theological and Biblical Foundations for Justice stretched me, but also started to put language to many realities that I had felt were true about my faith for some time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Kazi would slip effortlessly between a teaching style that mimicked the Western world of his academic experience and that which was energetic preaching that I imagine was true to his Malawian roots. It was an honor and a privilege to sit under his teaching.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At the start of every single class, Kazi would have us read aloud a prayer together known as the Oscar Romero prayer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The prayer was written by Cardinal Dearden<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>in honor of the Archbishop and the spirit of the words certainly reflect the life and ministry of Romero, who was a leader in fighting poverty and an advocate for social justice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The words became so important to me during my college chapter and continue to be to this day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Archbishop Oscar Romero was assassinated in 1980 while celebrating mass.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Last week, Romero was canonized in the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The words of the Romero prayer hang in our dinning room; a constant reminder to us of who we are and who we serve.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>May we all continue to be shaped by the life and example of this great Saint.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cjhoskins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/124\/2018\/10\/IMG_8589-e1539888717120.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-926\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cjhoskins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/124\/2018\/10\/IMG_8589-e1539888717120-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"901\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cjhoskins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/124\/2018\/10\/IMG_8589-e1539888717120-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cjhoskins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/124\/2018\/10\/IMG_8589-e1539888717120-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cjhoskins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/124\/2018\/10\/IMG_8589-e1539888717120-676x901.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>&#8220;It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent<\/em><br \/>\n<em>enterprise that is God&#8217;s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of<\/em><br \/>\n<em>saying that the Kingdom always lies beyond us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>No statement says all that could be said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>No prayer fully expresses our faith.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>No confession brings perfection.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>No pastoral visit brings wholeness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>No program accomplishes the Church&#8217;s mission.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>No set of goals and objectives includes everything.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>This is what we are about.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>We plant the seeds that one day will grow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>We lay foundations that will need further development.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>This enables us to do something, and to do it very well.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an<\/em><br \/>\n<em>opportunity for the Lord&#8217;s grace to enter and do the rest.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master<\/em><br \/>\n<em>builder and the worker.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>We are prophets of a future not our own.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cjhoskins?moderation_action=report_form&object_type=post&object_id=925&width=250&height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>words by jenny As an undergrad at North Park University, I had the opportunity to take a couple classes at the seminary, under an African scholar named Kazi Joshua.\u00a0 I would walk into Nyvall Hall to sit in a small classroom with students who felt so much older and experienced than I (even though, in [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":95,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-925","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","post-preview"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
