Ellie enjoys singing at the top of her lungs, being<br \/>\noutside and is already ready for a dance party.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nI\u2019ve been thinking of Mary and Martha recently. They\u2019re relatable women\u2026and we don\u2019t always<br \/>\nget to hear a lot about women in our scriptures. Sadly, I sometimes find this story co-opted to<br \/>\nshame Martha for her actions in NOT sitting at Jesus\u2019 feet. However, I think there is more<br \/>\nhappening in the text. Luke 10:38-42 says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2016\/12\/8b3f6aeed63abc4b437c56b92e4c7edf.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[2551]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2553\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2016\/12\/8b3f6aeed63abc4b437c56b92e4c7edf.jpg\" alt=\"8b3f6aeed63abc4b437c56b92e4c7edf\" width=\"269\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2016\/12\/8b3f6aeed63abc4b437c56b92e4c7edf.jpg 236w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2016\/12\/8b3f6aeed63abc4b437c56b92e4c7edf-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2016\/12\/8b3f6aeed63abc4b437c56b92e4c7edf-220x220.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/a>\u201cNow as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named<br \/>\nMartha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the<br \/>\nLord\u2019s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many<br \/>\ntasks; so she came to him and asked, \u201cLord, do you not care that my sister has left me<br \/>\nto do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.\u201d But the Lord answered her,<br \/>\n\u201cMartha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only<br \/>\none thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think it is easy to forget that Martha was doing exactly what everyone in her day was expecting<br \/>\nher to do. She was probably preparing a necessary meal for Jesus and his disciples as Jesus<br \/>\ntaught at her house. She was being hospitable. She was being welcoming. She was providing a<br \/>\nsafe and restful place for her friends. And\u2026it was understandable that she would want a little<br \/>\nhelp doing these things!<\/p>\n<p>Mary, on the other hand, breaks all gender norms and takes the place that would be reserved<br \/>\nonly for a male disciple\u2026she sits down at the teacher\u2019s feet and listens to him to learn. This is<br \/>\nwildly inappropriate for that time.<\/p>\n<p>Mary was rebuked by her sister and was probably glared at by the male disciples. Churches<br \/>\ntoday often shame Martha for her lack of focus on her Savior and complaining, anxious heart.<br \/>\nBut Jesus\u2026Jesus defends the one being shamed. And he gently speaks with Martha as well.<br \/>\nJesus doesn\u2019t seem to shame Martha for what she is doing\u2026only tells her that focus on himself<br \/>\nis the better thing. Perhaps Martha was distracted and not centered on Jesus as she was<br \/>\npreparing the meal, for Jesus says that Mary chose \u201cthe better option.\u201d But Jesus doesn\u2019t tell<br \/>\nher to stop working, does he (hopefully he sent one of the disciples into help after this<br \/>\nconversation!)? Perhaps Jesus knows Martha\u2019s calling and pushes her to see God\u2019s love for her<br \/>\nin that work too, just as Mary did as she sat at the teacher\u2019s feet.<\/p>\n<p>If only life were like that.<\/p>\n<p>Being a woman can be hard enough without getting shamed for how we serve Jesus. Some of<br \/>\nus are pastors. Some of us are mothers. Some of us are CEOs. We are chefs, janitors, artists,<br \/>\nteachers, social workers, mathematicians, dog-walkers, students, doctors, business owners and<br \/>\na whole host of other things that God has created us to be for this season or longer. We can sit<br \/>\nat Jesus\u2019 feet while we work at all these things. But while we espouse liberation for women and<br \/>\nsay that anyone can serve God in the ways she is created to, called to and wants to, we<br \/>\nsometimes don\u2019t act like it. We women sometimes shame even each other! Career women<br \/>\nshame women who are stay at home mothers and say that \u201cthey aren\u2019t true feminists.\u201d Stay at<br \/>\nhome mothers shame a woman who works full time because she \u201cisn\u2019t doing what God created<br \/>\na woman to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is wrong! We women need each other! We can sit at Jesus\u2019s feet as we live our diverse<br \/>\narray of life experiences. When a woman among us is struggling, let us lift her up in<br \/>\nencouragement. When a woman among us is failing, let us surround her and fight for her instead<br \/>\nof shame her and work for her demise. When a woman among us is being celebrated, let us<br \/>\nbring the cake and the streamers and not compare ourselves and our own accomplishments.<br \/>\nLet us encourage each other to serve and love God in whatever season we are in or path life<br \/>\ntakes. Let us tell each other the truth because we want the best for each other. Let us love our<br \/>\nsisters like we wish we were loved.
