Evelmyn has lived in Los Angeles, CA, Washington, DC, and Chicago, IL, enjoys traveling and learning about other cultures. She\u2019s passionate about issues of immigration, hunger, poverty, and human trafficking.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2015\/03\/Evelmyn-photo.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[1821]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1822\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2015\/03\/Evelmyn-photo-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Evelmyn photo\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2015\/03\/Evelmyn-photo-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2015\/03\/Evelmyn-photo.jpg 301w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>I\u2019m one of those people who get to read news from Facebook and\/or Twitter, thankfully the people I\u2019m friends with or who I follow in social media post and share interesting things, and actually good reads most of the time. So the other day I came across a post from One.org and one of their most recent campaigns <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/take-action\/poverty-is-sexist\/\">poverty-is-sexist<\/a><\/em>. The statement reads: \u201cBeing born female in one of the world\u2019s poorest countries means your life will be harder, simply because of your gender. Unlocking the full potential of girls and women wouldn\u2019t just transform their own lives, or even their families\u2019 \u2013 it could help end extreme poverty for good.\u201d UN Women also launched a similar campaign not too long ago called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heforshe.org\/\">heforshe<\/a><\/em>, \u201cMen raising their voice for change! The fight against gender inequality is a battle to end poverty, violence against women and promote women\u2019s economic empowerment.\u201d This month the White House announced the initiative, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usaid.gov\/letgirlslearn\">letgirlslearn<\/a><\/em> \u00a0through USAID (United States Agency for International Development), a program that would provide girls with an opportunity of education around the world.<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand it is encouraging to see these campaigns and programs not only from international NGOs but also from countries like the US.\u00a0 We need those resources especially in countries where child marriage is still a reality. On the other hand, it fills my heart with sadness, that in this day and age, we still need those campaigns and programs to understand and appreciate females. Every year International Women\u2019s Day is celebrated, and even though much has changed for good, and women can vote, for example, which is awesome! Our wages are still lower than our male counterparts, and for women of color, the struggle is bigger trying to break the barriers of gender and race. There is an ongoing fight for gender equality.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Then we come to the church, where just as in society change has happened, but is not enough. As a seminarian I experienced the disproportionate number of males versus female students, and not to mention females of color, we were a few. For the church to have more female pastors well\u2026 first we need to have more women in seminaries, we need to have more access and opportunity. Even though, many males are advocating for gender equality in our churches, and this commission and blog are a good example, we need more, and I wonder if we could launch a campaign similar to the <em>HeForShe<\/em>, wouldn\u2019t that be fun, different, and challenging?<\/p>\n<p>As we continue in <em>la lucha<\/em> (the struggle), I ask God for guidance as we continue this journey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/bge?moderation_action=report_form&#038;object_type=post&#038;object_id=1821&#038;width=250&#038;height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Evelmyn Ivens was born in Mexico and moved to the United States during her teenage years.
